Measure your waist, not your usual size

A pull-on pant has no zip to let out, so the waistband is the part that has to fit. Wrap a soft tape around your natural waist, the narrowest point, where your body bends when you lean to the side. Keep one finger under the tape and do not pull it tight.

Then measure your hips around the fullest point with your feet together. Write both numbers down before you look at a size list.

When you are between two sizes

In the polyester and spandex dress pants and yoga pants, choose the size that matches your waist. The knit stretches at the hip, and a waistband that is already loose will slide during the day.

In the linen blends, the palazzo pants and the cotton shirts, choose the larger size. These fabrics have little or no spandex and do not give at the hip or the shoulder. Drawstring waists make the larger size easy to wear.

Inseam and your shoes

Lay a pair of pants you like flat, fold one leg back, and measure from the crotch seam to the hem. That is your inseam. Where a style lists its inseam, compare the two numbers.

Length depends on what is on your feet. A straight leg looks best when the hem just meets the top of your shoe. A wide leg or a bootcut should nearly touch the floor in the heel you plan to wear, and a jogger should gather above the ankle bone.

Men's shirts

Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms. For a shirt you will tuck in, your usual size is right. For a Cuban camp collar shirt worn untucked, choose the size that hangs straight across the chest without pulling at the buttons.

Size runs by shelf

The widest size run on each shelf, counted from the styles on the site today. Not every color of a style is cut in every size.
